About

A live price tracker for MacBook Pro.

Every 15 minutes, MacProbe scans every MacBook Pro listing on eBay, Best Buy, and Apple Refurbished. It scores each one against MSRP, condition, and seller reputation so you can spot a fair price in under a minute — and skip the bait.

What this is

MacProbe is a real-time aggregator for MacBook Pro listings. The homepage is a single dashboard: every live listing across the three major US retailers, sorted by deal score, with a click-through to the original product page. The Intelligence tab goes deeper — for any model you can see the current fair value band, the best live deal, community discussion on Reddit, and reviews on YouTube.

The list is never older than 15 minutes. The "sold" archive goes back 90 days, which is the dataset behind every fair-value number on the site. There is no manual curation. If a listing is live, it appears in the dashboard. If it sells, it appears in the sold archive within two cron runs.

How the scoring works

Every listing gets a deal score from 0 to 100. The number is not magic. It is a weighted sum of six inputs, each of which you can see broken out in the Intelligence tab for any model.

Discount vs MSRP

20% off MSRP earns 40 points. 40% off earns the full discount allotment. Listings priced above MSRP get penalized: −15 over 5%, −25 over 15%. MSRP comes from the chip-and-config lookup table and is the only "advertised" number in the system.

Data freshness

A listing seen in the last 10 minutes earns up to 20 freshness points. The bonus decays linearly. Older listings are not removed, but they sort lower. A 48-hour-old listing is a stale listing, and you should verify the price before clicking.

Source reliability

Apple Refurbished and Best Buy open-box earn a +18 source bonus. New-from-Apple and new-from-Best-Buy earn +12. eBay listings earn +10 (refurb) or 0 (used) — the variance is higher, so the base bonus is smaller.

Seller reputation (eBay)

Pro refurbishers with 50,000+ feedback at 99%+ earn a +12 seller bonus. Sellers with 5,000+ feedback at 98%+ earn +6. New sellers (under 50 feedback) earn nothing — the listing is fine, but the trust signal is too thin to score.

Condition & risk

New earns 0 penalty. Certified refurb from Apple or Best Buy earns 0 penalty. Third-party refurb earns −8. Used earns −15. A listing flagged as high-risk (e.g. activation-locked, no returns, local pickup only) earns a −5 to −15 penalty. Read the deal card for the specific reason.

Chip generation

M5 earns +8. M4 earns +3. M3 earns −8. The chip bonus is a soft recency signal: newer chips are still commanding a small premium in the secondary market, so a discount on an M5 is worth more than the same percentage off an M3.

Fair value (MV): the P50 of observed sold prices for a given model and condition over the last 30 days. MV-low is the P25, MV-high is the P75. These numbers are not pulled from a manual survey; they are recomputed every night from D1 sold rows. They are a signal, not a guarantee — outliers, condition variance, and seller mis-representation can all skew the distribution.

Who built it

Hi, I'm Matthew Sturdevant. I built MacProbe in 2026 because I got tired of refreshing eBay saved searches and trying to remember whether $1,650 was a good price for an M4 Pro 14". It's a solo project, run out of Orangevale, California, hosted entirely on Cloudflare's free tier. The code is open source on GitHub.

I'm AWS-certified (Cloud Practitioner and Developer Associate) and have spent the last few years working on cloud infrastructure and data pipelines. MacProbe is a side project that grew out of wanting better tools for my own laptop-buying decisions. Find me on LinkedIn for the professional side. There is no newsletter, no email marketing list, and no login required to browse. If you sign up for price alerts, your email is used for alerts only — never sold, never shared. If you sign in with Google or Apple, your email is fetched once for the watchlist feature and otherwise not touched.
